Various Skin Disorders, Various Causes, All Ages

Skin disorders vary greatly and can occur at any age. In babies and young children, skin conditions may include:

  • Baby Acne
  • Eczema
  • Cradle Cap, which just as the name implies, is typically seen on the scalp
  • Erythema Toxicum, a blotchy red rash with small, fluid filled bumps
  • Heat Rash
  • Diaper Rash
  • Jaundice
  • Mongolian Spots, benign flat bluish skin marks commonly appearing at the base of the spine or on the back or buttocks
  • Newborn Dry Skin.
  • Hives
  • Warts
  • Birthmarks

These conditions may be caused by dermatitis, bacterial infections, viral or fungal infections, or other contact infections. Treatment varies from anti-itch to cortisone creams to pain relievers to antibiotics.  The prescriptions vary depending on the condition and can usually be managed or cured after a few treatments.

In teens and young adults, symptoms can be caused by:

  • Adolescent fluctuation of hormones
  • Unhealthy snacking
  • Fast food consumption
  • Drug use
  • Allergies—both skin and inhalant
  • Other situational or contact causes
  • Stressful circumstances

The early teenage years offer the perfect opportunity to begin an annual routine for dermatological skin screenings and check-ups. This routine can last a lifetime and can help to catch issues before they become serious.

In adults, symptoms can be light or severe, temporary or permanent, painful or painless. Some disorders may have simple causes, like diet, bacteria trapped in hair follicles, clogged skin pores, allergies, viruses, change in hormone levels in both middle-aged women and men, genetics, family history, or weakened immune systems.

Some adult symptoms can be more severe like adult eczema, skin infections, pruritus or severely dry and itchy skin, fungal skin infections, athlete’s foot, or actinic keratosis—also known as precancerous skin lesions.

Some symptoms have more serious underlying causes that may also need to be considered first like excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, environmental job or living conditions.

Some symptoms naturally come with age.  As we grow older, our skin changes in ways that can make it more prone to disease or infection. Skin becomes less elastic, less oily, and thinner the older we get. It bruises more easily, and it can take a much longer time to heal when cut or scraped.

Just as aging is inevitable, age-related skin changes are inevitable as well. These changes can include thinning of the skin on hands, arms, and legs, sagging facial and neck skin, the appearance of wrinkles, smile lines, crow’s feet, age spots, broken blood vessels and dry skin areas. Unhealthy skin changes, such as skin cancer, are also more common as we age and are usually made worse by daily unprotected exposure to the sun or other extreme elements, especially here in Florida.

While most skin disorders in adults, babies, children, and teens are minor and can be easily treated over time, other issues can take longer to solve.  Some of the many skin conditions we treat include:

  • Acne
  • Atopic dermatitis or Eczema
  • Shingles
  • Hives
  • Severe Sunburn
  • Contact Dermatitis
  • Diaper Rash in babies
  • Rosacea
  • Cold Sores
  • Dandruff
  • Cold Sores
  • Psoriasis
  • And more

Our Services

As a double board-certified dermatologist and pediatrician, Dr. Nyanda is fully licensed and possesses a high degree of expertise and experience.  She can address whatever dermatological issues you or your family member may have. Since completing her training and graduating over 15 years ago, she has focused her practice on caring for both pediatric and adult dermatological conditions. Her practice provides compassionate services in and around Zephyrhills community.

Medical

The skin is the largest organ of the body, consisting of water, protein, fats, and minerals. It includes the nails, hair, sweat and oil glands.  Your skin protects your body from germs and chemicals, it contains nerves that help you feel sensations like touch, hot, cold and pain, and it regulates your body temperature.

The skin has three layers:

  • The outermost layer of skin is called the epidermis and it provides a waterproof barrier or covering of your skeleton, muscles, tendons, and organs
  • Just beneath the epidermis is the dermis.  This contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands
  • The deeper subcutaneous tissue or hypodermis is made of fat and connective tissue.

At Nyanda Dermatology, we first review your medical history.  Have you had a melanoma, a mole, a wart?  Do you have a rash?  Are you in the sun often?  Do you regularly wear sunscreen?  A hat?  Does your family have any history of skin cancers?

We then do a thorough screening of the outer layer of your skin, including a head-to-toe examination of your scalp, face, eyes, ears, neck, upper body—front and back, arms, legs, feet. We check for any abnormalities, discoloration, or obvious changes and we address any concerns you may have.

Surgical

If any pre-cancerous conditions are discovered on your body like a mole that has changed in color, feel or size, or that bleeds, Dr. Nyanda will immediately recommend treatment and continue to monitor the issue over annual or bi-annual appointments.

In the meantime, if you have any of these warning signs, you should contact Dr. Nyanda’s office immediately to set up an appointment:

  • Changes in appearance of a mole or wart
  • Post-mole-removal irritation to your skin
  • Persistent pimples or sores that don’t heal
  • Impaired vision
  • Scaly or raised patches of skin
  • Persistent itching
  • Fingernail or toenail changes

Cosmetic

Tired of looking older than you feel?  Are wrinkles, smile lines or crow’s feet suddenly appearing?  Don’t recognize yourself in the mirror?  Concerned about sagging or mottled skin?

At Nyanda Dermatology, we can help you look and feel younger with a wide range of simple solutions:

  • Injectable dermal fillers
  • Botox
  • Chemical peels
  • Dermabrasion
  • Microdermabrasion
  • Laser Resurfacing
  • And more

Any of the above therapies can be utilized to enhance your appearance, create a more youthful look, tighten sagging skin, and actually improve your self-confidence and self-esteem. Sometimes, you can reverse the signs of aging by just using our wide variety of professional-grade topical skincare products.

Pediatric Dermatology

Growing up, especially throughout the teenage years can be difficult.  Kids tease one another, pimples appear, hormones rage.  As a specialist in Pediatric Dermatology, Dr. Nyanda understands that each child has a different set of needs when it comes to looking their best and feeling good about themselves.

She is expertly trained to focus on many skin conditions prone to children and teenagers:  birthmarks, skin infections, moles, hives, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, cysts, rashes, acne, and warts.  In addition, she appreciates the emotional toll these conditions can cause on young people.

Dr. Nyanda considers the medical and emotional needs of kids of all ages..  Each child is different.  Each needs individual care, a safe and comfortable place in which to be examined and treated.  Each needs to feel that “this too shall pass” and whatever skin issues they’re dealing with will be treatable.
