Medical Dermatology Service Overview
The Florida Board of Medicine has defined the use of lasers, Botox® injections, collagen injections, soft tissue filler, injectable dermal fillers, nonsurgical fat reduction, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, tattoo removal and any other non-invasive injections of materials as medical treatments that can only be provided by a Medical Spa or MedSpa.
Unlike day spas, medical spas must be affiliated with, overseen, or run by a medical doctor. The law requires that all services be provided by licensed medical professionals who have current certifications in the medical dermatology procedures they are providing. While not every procedure is done by a doctor, they are performed under the supervision of the doctor, most often a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.
Medical spas themselves can vary widely, and while you may be more familiar with day spas whose focus is on relaxation, most medical spas are driven by results.
In recent years, the number of medical spas in this country has grown as more and more people live longer active lives, are exposed more often to the elements, especially the sun, and have become better educated and more self-aware of their own medical issues and potential treatments.
At Nyanda Dermatology, we are board certified and fully licensed medical professionals with years of experience. Dr. Lisa Nyanda-Manalo, a double board-certified dermatologist and pediatrician, personally supervises all medical treatments.
A Short Biology Lesson
Because the skin is the largest organ of the body, it takes the most abuse. Sun, heat, wind, sweat, bruising, cuts, the abuse goes on literally, forever. Consisting of water, protein, fats, and minerals, the skin also includes the nails, hair, sweat and oil glands. Your skin protects your body from germs and chemicals, it contains nerves that help you feel sensations like touch, hot, cold and pain, and it regulates your body temperature.
The skin has three layers:
- The outermost layer of skin is called the epidermis and it provides a waterproof barrier or covering of your skeleton, muscles, tendons, and organs
- Just beneath the epidermis is the dermis. This contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands
- The deeper subcutaneous tissue or hypodermis is made of fat and connective tissue
All three layers of skin work together to protect your inner organs, muscles, tendons and all the parts that make us human.
What We Focus On
While Western doctors continue to treat patient symptoms, as their medical protocol demands, many homeopathic or Eastern culture medical professionals have dedicated themselves to focusing their treatments more on wellness and mindfulness. This has eventually helped to create a positive connection between medicine and Medspas. This connection has allowed the expansion of therapies available to the public, and has encouraged more dermatological companies to concentrate on inventing new forms of remedies for skincare.
At Nyanda Dermatology, we’re focused on making sure that your skin is strong and healthy, without problem areas and certainly, without skin cancer. At our first appointment, we review your medical history. Have you had a melanoma, a mole, a wart? Do you have a rash? Are you in the sun often? Do you regularly wear sunscreen? A hat? Does your family have any history of skin cancers? What do you think your skin issues are?
We then do a thorough screening of the outer layer or epidermis of your skin, including a head-to-toe examination of your scalp, face, eyes, ears, neck, upper body—front and back, arms, legs, feet. We check for any abnormalities, discoloration, or obvious changes and we address the concerns you may have.
We also check on a variety of other everyday problems, such as acne, cellulite, and sun damage. Our screening process in thorough and designed to examine and then diagnose so that we can recommend the necessary treatments to get your skin back to optimum health.
